Brazil Jobless Rate Climbs To 11.3% In June

Brazil's unemployment rate rose in June after holding steady in the previous month amid a severe recession in several decades, figures from the statistical office IBGE showed Friday.

The jobless rate climbed to 11.30 percent from 11.20 percent seen in each of the previous two months. The latest figure was in line with economists' expectations.

In the same month last year, the jobless rate was 8.30 percent.

The unemployment rate has been rising steadily since the start of 2015, when it was 6.80 percent.

The number of unemployed surged by 38.7 percent or by about 3.2 million year-on-year to 11.6 million people in the three months to June.

Employment declined by 1.5 percent year-on-year to 90.8 million persons.

Average earning decreased by 4.2 percent annually.
