Factory orders rose more than expected in September, according to new government data released Thursday. The advance came even as the rise for the previous month was revised higher.

The U.S. Commerce Department reported that factory orders climbed by a seasonally adjusted 0.3 percent in September. Economists had expected a 0.2 percent increase.

Figures for the previous month were revised to a 0.4 percent increase. Originally, August's rise was reported as 0.2 percent.

Durable goods orders were down 0.3 percent for September. This covers items meant to last at least three years, giving a look at the health of the heavy manufacturing sector. Orders for the more disposable non-durable goods advanced 0.9 percent.
