Crypterium, the world's first mobile crypto bank, announced the appointment of Marc O'Brien as its Chief Executive Officer. O'Brien is a former CEO of the UK and Ireland division of card payments giant Visa, and a long time advisor to MasterCard.
In a statement, the startup said he will now lead the launch of Crypterium App that will allow users to pay with cryptocurrencies with the same ease and convenience as with cash or credit cards.
With the app, users will be able to issue virtual cards, link them to Apple Pay, Samsung Pay or Android Pay, bind them to their crypto accounts, and pay at any NFC terminal, or via scanning the QR codes.
O'Brien has over 25 years of experience in Financial Services, FinTech and RegTech. He led Visa UK & Ireland from 2008 and 2014. During his time as CEO, Visa's business doubled to $600 million from $250 million, with market share of debit card payments increasing to 97%, Crypterium noted.
After leaving Visa in 2014, O'Brien had been a key advisor on some startups in the UK, including Revolut where he was the advising CEO.
Recently, he was also advisor to the UK's Royal Mint on the possible creation of a Gold backed Crypto Token.
O'Brien said, "I strongly believe that cryptocurrency is about to go mainstream and we can be pioneers to build Crypterium into a terrific business."
Estonia- incorporated Crypterium raised $52 million through an initial coin offering last year. As per reports, the company now aims to partner with Visa or MasterCard to launch cryptocurrency cards or virtual cards.
