Germany's TE-FOOD has partnered with UK-based firm HALAL TRAIL to implement a blockchain-based food traceability solution designed for the halal food chain aimed to serve over 2 billion Muslims across the world.

The two companies will create the pilots in Lancaster, Tunbridge Wells & Manchester, U.K. as a reference to be implemented globally. It will track chickens and lambs from farm to table, through the halal food chain.

TE-FOOD integrates supply chain companies, consumers, and governments/authorities to improve food safety, eliminate food frauds, and decrease costs of the supply chain companies.

The solution is under testing before the pilots start in June 2018.

The halal method in the food industry refers to the permissible or lawful way of preparing food and drinks according to Islamic law. It is the Islamic equivalent of "kosher" for Jews.

The company said its Identification Tools are applied to livestock, transports, and fresh food packages to follow the items throughout the supply chain. Fresh food products in retail can be traced back to their origins together with food safety related information.

According to industry estimates, the global halal food market will reach $2.55 trillion by 2024.
