Fox News topped MSNBC and CNN combined in the cable news ratings race for the month of October, according to Nielsen Media Research.

And President Donald Trump said that is because the pro-Trump and pro-Republican channel treats him fairly.

On Wednesday, he reproduced on his Twitter handle an article published by The Hill.

He quoted the title, "FoxNews tops CNN and MSNBC combined in October cable news ratings," with a comment, "That's because they treat me fairly!"

Trump's claim opened up a lengthy debate on Twitter, comments pouring in for and against it.

Actor Matt Meinsen, who is portraying DS Agent Matt on the CBS television show "Madam Secretary", was among several of his Twitter followers to ridicule the statement.

Overall, Fox averaged 2.8 million total viewers in prime time last month, up 25 percent from October 2017, according to Nielsen Media Research data.

MSNBC placed second in the category, with 1.58 million viewers, while CNN finished third, with 931,000 viewers, during the same period.

The president, who contends he has largely been covered unfairly by the press, employs the term "fake news" often when describing a section of the media that is critical of him.

He singles out four news organizations in particular - CNN, MSNBC, the New York Times and the Washington Post - naming them in public.

Once Trump tweeted that he wants to re-brand "Fake News CNN" as "Fraud News CNN."

Few months ago he barred a CNN reporter from White House media events.

Apparently provoked by a report that NBC news published last year, which says the President wanted to have a nearly tenfold increase in the U. S. nuclear arsenal, Trump indicated that its time to cancel the licenses of media networks that spread the so-called "fake news."

In August, more than 300 US news outlets have published editorials as part of a campaign to counter President Donald Trump's attempts to vilify the media, and to promote a free press.
