A snapshot of Berkshire Hathaway Inc.'s (BRKa, BRKb) U.S. equity portfolio filed with the SEC showed that Warren Buffett's U.S. equity portfolio at the end of December quarter was $57.93 billion, up from $56.55 billion at the end of the September quarter.
Berkshire, which recently joined the S&P 500 index, closed the merger of Burlington Northern Santa Fe Corp. (BNI) in early February. Berkshire raised cash through sale of equities and $8 billion of senior notes to fund the acquisition. Berkshire has sold off its entire stake in other railroad stocks Union Pacific Corp. (UNP) and Norfolk Southern Corp. (NSC) during the fourth quarter.
Buffett, whose investment moves are closed watched by investors, has continued reducing his stake in Houston, Texas-based integrated energy company ConocoPhillips (COP). Buffett held 37.7 million shares at fourth-quarter end, down significantly from 57.43 million shares held at the end of the September quarter.
Holding in New Brunswick, New Jersey-based Johnson & Johnson (JNJ) was also cut by Buffett to 27.1 million shares from 36.8 million shares owned at the end of the September.
Berkshire has also reduced his stake in the Cincinnati, Ohio-based consumer goods manufacturer Procter & Gamble Co. (PG) to 87.5 million shares, from 96.31 million shares held at the end of third quarter of 2009.
Buffett held only 421,800 shares of Exxon Mobil Corp. (XOM) at the end of the fourth quarter of 2009, disposing 854,490 shares during the quarter. Buffett disclosed about his investment in the Irving, Texas-based company while reporting his third quarter portfolio.
Berkshire has also has reduced stakes in Ingersoll-Rand Co. Ltd. (IR) to 5.6 million shares, Gannett Co. (GCI) to 2.2 million shares, CarMax Inc. (KMX) to 8 million shares and WellPoint Inc. (WLP) to 1.3 million shares, SunTrust Banks Inc. (STI) to 2.4 million shares, and UnitedHealth Group Inc. (UNH) to 1.17 million shares during the December quarter.
As previously disclosed, Buffett's stake in Moody's Corp. (MCO) has been reduced to 31.81 million common shares during the fourth quarter.
Ownership in Wal-Mart Stores, Inc. (WMT) rose to 39.04 million shares from 37.84 million shares held at the end of September. Berkshire also raised his stake in San Francisco, California-based Wells Fargo & Co. (WFC) to 320 million shares from approximately 313.3 million shares held three-months earlier.
Buffett's company also disclosed increased stakes in Phoenix, Arizona-based waste management company Republic Services Inc. (RSG), showing a holding of 8.29 million shares, and Becton Dickinson and Co. (BDX), where he held 1.5 million shares at the end of the December quarter. Ownership in Nestle SA was 3.4 million shares, similar to his initial investment.
The filing about Buffett's portfolio excludes details about some stock picks, as he is permitted to keep them confidential for a while to avoid copycat investing.
