American Honda June Sales Fall 32.4%; Sees Growth In Light Truck Segments

American Honda Motor Co., Inc., a unit of Honda Motor Co. Ltd. (HMC), said that its June vehicle sales declined 32.4% and also reported an year-to-date decrease of 33.1%. However, sales of Odyssey and Pilot light truck models improved 11.8% and 7.7% respectively and the company sees signs of strength in its light truck segments.

During the month, the company's vehicle sales were 100,420 units, down from 142,539 units in the previous year.

Honda total car sales decreased 43.8% for the month to 52,662 units from 89,947 units in the earlier year. Honda light truck sales decreased 5.6% 39,478 units from 40,136 units a year ago.

Acura Division total car sales in June were 5,043 units, down 37.1% from 7,692 units in the prior year. Acura total truck sales declined 34.8% to 3,237 units from 4,764 units in the same month last year.

However, domestic car sales in Honda division decreased 40.4% to 42,224 units from 68,009 units in the preceding year while Acura Division domestic car sales were 3,018 units, down 16.1% from 3,454 units a year ago.

Domestic truck sales for the month of June increased 5.5% to 40,502 units from 36,849 units in the earlier year, with 11.5% growth in Honda Division sales. Acura Division Domestic Truck sales decreased 34.8% to 3,237 units from 4,764 units in the preceding year.

Import car sales for the month declined 54.3% to 12,463 units from 26,176 units in the prior year and import truck sales were 2,213 units, down 73.6% from 8,051 units last year.

According to the company, sales of Odyssey and Pilot light truck models improved 11.8% and 7.7% respectively.

John Mendel, executive vice president of sales commented, "We're seeing signs of strength in our light truck segments with solid gains for Honda's Odyssey and Pilot models this month."

Honda Division total sales for June were 92,140 units, a decline of 32% from 130,083 units last year. American Honda's Acura Division total sales declined 36.2% to 8,280 units from 12,456 units in the previous year.

On an year-to-date basis, the company recorded total sales of 530,778 units, down 33.1% from 798,358 units in the prior year. Honda Division total sales declined 33% to 479,696 units from 720,444 units in the earlier year. Acura Division total year-to-date sales were 51,082 units, a decrease of 34% from 77,914 units a year ago.

HMC closed Wednesday's regular trading at $27.51 on the NYSE.
