Five people were killed and 13 others wounded during weekend parliamentary and mayoral elections in the Dominican Republic, which were dominated by President Leonel Fernandez's ruling party.
Reports said the victims were all men shot to death Sunday in clashes between Fernandez's Dominican Liberation Party (PLD) and the Opposition Dominican Revolutionary Party (PRD) in the south of the Caribbean country.
Fernandez's party had secured the most seats in both Houses of Parliament, according to results published by the Electoral Board. It secured a landslide victory winning 30 seats in the 32-member Senate.
The PLD is projected to win 88 of the 146 mayoral posts, while the PRD is heading for victory in 60.
Opposition pulled an upset in the second largest Dominican city of Santiago.
