Music History: Mariah Carey's 'Hero' Topped Chart 17 Years Ago

"Hero" from Mariah Carey reached the top of the U.S. singles chart on December 25, 1993.

The song, with a sole writing credit to Carey, was featured on her third studio album, "Music Box." Originally, the tune was meant for the soundtrack of the movie "Hero," starring Dustin Hoffman and Geena Davis, with Gloria Estefan slated to be the singer. But after the song was completed, Mariah's people decided it was too good to give away.

"Music Box" would also produce the hits "Without You," "Anytime You Need a Friend" and "Dreamlover," which reached number one earlier that year.

"Hero" took over the top spot from Janet Jackson's "Again." The song held on for four weeks before giving up its perch to "All for Love" by Bryan Adams, Rod Stewart and Sting.
