Russia has warned the U.S. and European Union against imposing unilateral sanctions on Iran which go beyond those planned by the United Nations Security Council (UNSC), reports said on Wednesday.
Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov who spoke to Secretary of State Hillary Clinton on phone was quoted as saying in the Russian media that the U.S. and EU were seeking individual sanctions against Tehran.
"There is information that the US and the European Union are not limiting themselves to a common position on Iran in the UN Security Council and want to introduce additional, one-sided sanctions," Lavrov said.
This he felt amounts to breach of international laws and said that an informal agreement on more punitive sanctions against Iran had been agreed up on by permanent members of the UNSC and Germany.
"Now, the non-permanent members of the Security Council will have a chance to weigh in on the draft," he said.
However, Lavrov was upbeat over the resumption of talks with Iran following discussions scheduled at the UNSC along with the deal on uranium swap reached with Turkey and Brazil.
