Today In Music History - August 9

The First Annual Rock Music Awards aired on August 9, 1975.

Hosted by Elton John and Diana Ross, the event included an award for Best Rock Movie or Theatrical Production, an honor presented by Michael Douglas and Brenda Vaccaro and set to be accepted by Who frontman Roger Daltrey and Ann-Margret on behalf of the movie "Tommy."

However, Who drummer Keith Moon ran ape-like onto the stage ahead of them and took the award. The performance may have been an omen for the show; the Rock Music Awards would only last two more years.
