1977 - Waylon Jennings Arrested for Cocaine Possession; A disgrace To The Badge
Today In Music History - August 24

Soon after being named an honorary police chief, country singer Waylon Jennings was arrested by federal agents for possession of cocaine on August 24, 1977. The singer was in the throes of addiction to the drug, but errors on the part of the DEA caused all charges to be dropped. Jennings however would remain addicted to cocaine until 1984, when he quit by going cold turkey. The heavy drug use however, would take its toll as he grew older; he developed diabetes, for which he had to have his foot amputated in 2001, shortly before his death in 2002.
