Canadian rockers Sheriff hit the top of the Billboard Hot 100 chart with their power ballad “When I’m With You” on February 4, 1989. That track was released as a single from the band’s self-titled debut album, which was released seven years before. When the track hit the top of the chart, it bumped Phil Collins’ "Two Hearts" out of the top spot. The track held on for one week in the top spot before Paula Abdul moved up to number one with “Straight Up.”The song was penned by songwriter/pianist Arnold Lanni, who wrote it for his then girlfriend as a Valentine’s Day present. She was the first person to hear the song and, while speaking with Billboard, Lanni said she loved it immediately. The couple eventually married.
