Monica hit the top of the Billboard 200 chart with her fourth studio release, “After the Storm,” on June 29, 2003. The album followed her 2002 offering “All Eyez on Me” and includes the singles “So Gone,” “Knock Knock/Get It Off,” and “U Should've Known Better.”
When the album hit number one, it claimed the top spot from “Dance with My Father” by Luther Vandross. She held on at number one through July 5, 2003 when “Dangerously in Love” by Beyoncé claimed the top spot.
“So Gone” rose to number ten on the Billboard Hot 100 chart and was penned by Missy Elliott. Speaking with MTV, Monica explained the track, saying:
“She wrote that record after eavesdropping on my phone conversation,” Monica recalled to MTV News in 2012. “So when you think about things like that, that can only be done by somebody that's very close to you.”
