2002 - Nelly Hits #1 With ‘Hot In Herre’

Nelly hit the top of the Billboard Hot 100 chart with his smash party anthem “Hot In Herre” on June 29, 2002. The track was originally released as part of Nelly’s second album, “Nellyville,” and hit radio in mid-April.

In grabbing the top spot, Nelly dethroned Ashanti, whose single “Foolish” had been at number one for the ten previous weeks. “Hot In Herre” went on to occupy to top position for the next six weeks. The singer succeeded himself with his track "Dilemma," featuring Kelly Rowland.

“Hot In Herre” was produced by Pharrell Williams and Chad Hugo, better known as the Neptunes, and was inspired by a track called “Bustin’ Loose” by Chuck Brown and the Soul Searchers. According to Hugo, it’s Nelly’s voice that brings the track together.

“His voice was the instrument added on top of the simple groove. It was minimal but it was perfect,” Hugo told Billboard.
