2009 - Chris Brown Arrested For Hitting Rihanna

R&B singer Chris Brown was booked on suspicion of assault on February 8, 2009. The victim of his attack was initially unidentified, but was later revealed to be girlfriend and fellow singer Rihanna.

The attack took place on the day of the Grammy Awards, where Brown was scheduled to perform his hit "Forever." However, that morning, an altercation with Rihanna took place that left her with bruises on her face. Both singers canceled their Grammy performances.

Brown would eventually plead guilty to assault and was sentenced to community service. The up-and-coming singer, 19 years old at the time of the attack, saw his burgeoning career stall following the incident. His "Graffiti" album, released the December following the attack, marked the lowest chart performance of any of his three studio efforts.

Meanwhile, the 20-year-old Rihanna saw her career continue to take off. The following year, her "Rude Boy" and "Only Girl (In the World)" singles would both reach number one. In addition, she was featured on Eminem's number one hit "Love the Way You Lie," a dark song about domestic violence.
