The Chicago Sun Times broke news that R. Kelly was under investigation for child pornography on February 8, 2002. The singer, 33 at the time, was taken into custody in Florida on 21 counts of child porn pressed against him in Illinois. The story broke after an unknown source leaked a copy of a sex tape featuring Kelly to the Sun Times. His defense team later claimed the tape had been fabricated and did not, in fact, star Kelly at all. He later released a statement on his indictments saying he had “complete faith in our justice system.” He also assured fans that “when all of the facts come out, fans will know I’m no criminal.”
