China Inflation Slows To 1.2% In May

Consumer prices in China were up 1.2 percent on year in May, the National Bureau of Statistics said on Tuesday.

That was slightly below expectations for 1.3 percent, and it was down from 1.5 percent in April.

Food prices were up 1.6 percent on year in May, while non-food prices gained 1.0 percent.

On a monthly basis, inflation eased 0.2 percent - the same rate as in April.

The bureau also said that producer prices were down 4.6 percent on year - beneath forecasts for -4.5 percent but unchanged from the previous month.

The Federal Reserve policy session was in focus as it was the first to be led by the new chief Kevin Warsh. In Europe, central banks of the U.K. and Switzerland announced their rate decisions. In Asia, the Bank of Japan drew attention for its policy moves, while data out of China threw some light on the state of the economy.
