Steve Wozniak, Apple co-founder, wants to see Bitcoin as the single global currency, echoing comments made by Twitter CEO Jack Dorsey recently. Ripple Donates $50 Mln To Major Universities For Blockchain Research
Ripple, a cryptocurrency and payments start-up, announced a $50 million funding to 17 universities around the world, aiming to boost research in blockchain, cryptocurrency and digital payments. Ripple's University Blockchain Research Initiative or UBRI will collaborate with universities including MIT, the University of North Carolina, and the University of Pennsylvania, among others, to support and accelerate academic research, technical development and innovation. SEC Appoints Valerie Szczepanik As Senior Advisor for Digital Assets & Innovation
The Securities and Exchange Commission appointed Valerie Szczepanik as Senior Advisor for Digital Assets and Innovation, a newly created position. She was also named the Associate Director of the Division of Corporation Finance, reporting to Division Director Bill Hinman. In her advisory role, Szczepanik will coordinate efforts across all SEC Divisions and Offices regarding the application of U.S. securities laws to emerging digital asset technologies and innovations, including Initial Coin Offerings and cryptocurrencies, the watchdog said in a statement.
Coinbase Enters Japanese Crypto Market
Coinbase, a major US crypto exchange, is entering the Japanese crypto market as it aims to accelerate the global adoption of digital currencies. In a blog post, the company announced the launch of its office in Japan, which will be led by Nao Kitazawa, a former investment banker with Morgan Stanley. Coinbase is expected to apply for a license with the FSA within the year. Vermont Regulator Issues Cease-and-Desist Order To Crypto Firm LevelNet
The Vermont Department of Financial Regulation (DFR) has issued a cease-and-desist order to California-based cryptocurrency firm LevelNet against an ongoing initial coin offering (ICO) that 'violates' the Vermont Uniform Securities Act.
