Three children were killed and dozens critically wounded in an attack Monday, apparently targeting the head of the French forces in Afghanistan.
French military spokesman said insurgents fired two rockets into a crowded marketplace in the town of Tagab, north-east of Kabul.
General Marcel Druart, the commander of French troops in eastern Afghanistan, was attending a meeting of tribal elders 300 meters away, when the attack occurred.
The NATO-led International Security Assistance Force (ISAF) say they spotted the rocket launch site and retaliated with artillery.The ISAF is in attempts to win the trust and support of local civilians in the region, which is a Taliban stronghold.
France has the fourth largest contingent in ISAF battling terrorism in Afghanistan, with 3,750 troops deployed there.
