Elton John has confirmed a date this spring at the historical Chichen Itza Mayan ruins on Mexico's Yucatan Peninsula. The archeological site has hosted concerts by several of the world's top vocalists, including Luciano Pavarotti, Plácido Domingo and British opera star Sarah Brightman.
Though initial reports said that the April 3 date may be moved due to excavations at the pyramid, Yucatan officials have confirmed that the dig will not interfere with John's performance.
As Sir Elton prepares for the historic show in Mexico, he continues to serve as a mentor to an unlikely friend, rapper Eminem. Back in May 2009, Eminem revealed that John had become a personal confidant and was guiding him through his battle with prescription drugs.
In a recent radio interview, John said that the two are still in close contact and that Eminem is winning the fight.
"I've been helping Eminem over the last 18 months and he's doing brilliantly," he said. "I'm there if people want my help. If people ask for help you tell them where to go but there's no point advising people if they don't want to do it."
