An American national was detained Wednesday at India's New Delhi's Indira Gandhi international airport after security personnel found a knife and some objectionable documents in his hand- baggage during routine checking.
Winston Marshal Carmichael, 61, of New York--and said to be a convert to Islam--was detained by members of the Central Industrial Security Force (CISF) following a tip-off from the Intelligence Bureau (IB) minutes before he was scheduled to board by a Qatar Airways flight to New York via Doha.
He was handed over to the Delhi Police who are now questioning him with the assistance from the I.B. The American Embassy is informed of his arrest.
Carmichael, having a striking similarity with that of Pakistan-born terror suspect, David Headley, could not provide an explanation for the possessing the articles.
Like Headley, he is believed to be a convert from Christianity to Islam, which he did some 40 years ago, and is suspected of having links with a terror outfit and had visited several places in India.
Carmichael, who has a tourist visa to India, Pakistan and Bangladesh, came to India from neighboring Pakistan. This was his third visit to India; he had visited Pakistan and Bangladesh on the two earlier occasions also.
