Tuesday, Genesee & Wyoming Inc. (GWR) said the company and Western Labrador Rail Services, the company's new subsidiary, signed a long term agreement with Bloom Lake Railway Co., a subsidiary of Consolidated Thompson Iron Mines Ltd. Under the agreement Western Labrador Rail Services will provide rail transportation services to Bloom Lake Railway.
Operated as part of GWI's Canada Region, Western Labrador Rail Services will haul unit trains of iron ore over Bloom Lake Railway's newly constructed 31-kilometer railway from Consolidated Thompson Iron Mines' Bloom Lake mine, located in the province of Quebec on the south end of the Labrador Trough, to Wabush, Labrador. The railway construction is expected to be completed during the first quarter of 2010 with iron ore shipments starting immediately thereafter.
