As the week unfolds, a slew of report cards from retailers, including specialty retailers, branded apparel makers, departmental store operators and food and beverage companies are scheduled to be released. The performance of retailers is considered to be a barometer of consumer spending, which makes up roughly 71% of the U.S. economic activity. Although depressed job markets had restrained income growth, consumers did not completely give up on spending, as stimulus measures provided them with the wherewithal to spend. Therefore, it will be interesting to watch how resilient the consumers were in the calendar year fourth quarter, which encompasses the key 'holiday selling' season.
