A freight train is reported to have been derailed Sunday after suspected Muslim rebels blasted a railroad track in Russia's turbulent North Caucasus region of Muslim-majority Dagestan Republic.

Eight freight cars of the train derailed near Inchkhe station and four of them overturned, but there were no casualties. An inquiry team reached the spot to investigate the incident.

The latest attack came just days after a series of suicide attacks in the country, including those against Moscow Metro and in the Daghestani town of Kizlyar, claimed 52 lives. It also came a day after two policemen were killed in another area of Daghestan.

The attacks have revived the specter of Islamist terrorism in Russia after last such strikes in 2004.

"The incident took place at around 3:40 Moscow time (2340 GMT Saturday) near the Inchkhe station in Karabudakhkentsky district," RIA Novosti reported, quoting the police.

Russia's predominantly Muslim regions in the Caucasus, including Chechnya, have witnessed violence by Islamist groups striving to build a Sharia-ruled Caucasus Emirate from the Caspian Sea in the east to the Black Sea in the west.

Self-styled Emir of Chechen separatist group "Caucasus Emirate," Doku Umarov, who claimed responsibility for the Moscow Metro attacks by "Black Widows" suicide-squad, said that "the zone of military operations will be extended to the territory of Russia."

He warned that "the war is coming to their cities" and that attacks would would be carried out against other soft targets.
