The pilot of a small plane with three others aboard, was killed after it crashed about 8:15 a.m. (11:15 a.m. ET) Monday in a residential neighborhood of Las Vegas, Nevada.

Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) spokesman Ian Gregor said the crash occurred after the single-engined Piper Cherokee, registered in the name of a Louisiana resident, failed to gain altitude after taking off from Henderson Executive Airport, south of Las Vegas.

The pilot, identified by family-members as Douglas Touchet, 45, of Erath, tried to return to the airport, but the plane crashed on a street in a neighborhood about two miles northwest of Henderson, he added.

A spokeswoman for Clark County said the plane hit some cars upon crashing.

Touchet's wife, Susan, as well as their friends Randall and Tamika Savoy of Catahoula reportedly sustained non-fatal burn injuries.

Investigators from the FAA and National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) are investigating the crash.
