Texas-based Whittington's Jerky Inc. has recalled about 126 pounds of beef jerky products for possible Salmonella contamination.
The products subject to recall include, 2-oz. packages of Whittington's Original Beef Jerky and 4-oz. packages of Whittington's Original Beef Jerky. The affected products were produced on Oct. 31, 2011 and distributed to convenience stores in West Texas and at the company's retail operation.
The contamination was discovered during a routine testing by the U.S. Department of Agriculture's Food Safety and Inspection Service.
Consumption of food contaminated with Salmonella can cause salmonellosis, one of the most common bacterial food borne illnesses. Salmonella infections cause fever, diarrhea and abdominal cramps. However, in persons with weak immune systems, such as infants, the elderly, and persons with HIV infection or undergoing chemotherapy, salmonellosis can be life-threatening.
