Cyclone Giovanna has caused widespread damage in Madagascar after it made landfall along the eastern coast of the Indian Ocean island early Tuesday, accompanied by torrential rains and winds of up to 120mph.
Media reports citing local officials said the cyclone caused maximum damage in capital Antananarivo as well as the eastern port city of Toamasina and several other eastern regions. A clear idea of the damages caused by the cyclone is yet to emerge.
The high winds uprooted trees and electricity pylon, and tore roofs from houses. The floods triggered by the torrential rains is said to have left a total of 70 families in Madagascar, out of which 45 were in capital Antananarivo.
Officials said at least three people have been killed by the cyclone, out of which two deaths were reported in the eastern Brickaville district. Meanwhile, some unconfirmed local media suggested that two more people have died in the cyclone.
The cyclone is expected to weaken as it moves over the island nation, which regularly gets battered by cyclones and tropical storms during the rainy season that extends from February to May.
