Republican presidential candidate Mitt Romney lashed out at rival Rick Santorum for using robo-calling to entice Democrats to vote for him in the Michigan primary on Tuesday.

The former Governor of Massachusetts was asked what he thought about the robo-calling on Fox News' "Fox & Friends" this morning.

"Well, it's a dirty trick," Romney began. "It's outrageous to see Rick Santorum team up with the Obama people and go out after union labor in Detroit and try to get them to vote against me."

Romney went on to say that Republicans don't want Democrats deciding who the GOP nominee is going to be, saying that the decision should be up to Republicans.

"I just think it's outrageous and disgusting, a terrible dirty trick at the last hour, by the way, late in the afternoon on the day before the election, maybe hoping no one would notice, they start sending out calls to Democrats, union members, telling them to go into the Republican primary and vote against Mitt Romney," he added.

Santorum sought to defend the calls in a separate interview with Fox News on Monday, claiming that he is trying to attract the Democratic voters he would need to defeat President Obama in a general election campaign.

According to polls, Romney and Santorum are in a dead heat in the race for the Michigan primary, which takes place on Tuesday.

The state has additional significance because it is Romney's home state and one that he won in the 2008 Republican primary. Losing the state would be a major blow to his frontrunner status.
