Women are less capable of handling stress than men as the latter experience greater flows of blood to the heart during times of mental anxiety, says a study presented at an Experimental Biology meeting.
The study measured the blood pressure and heart rates of 17 men and women during times of relaxation and times of stress.
While at rest the men and women had little variation, and during the stress tests both sexes showed increases in heart rate and blood pressure. However, while under stress men showed an increase in coronary blood flow but the women did not.
"Stress reduction is important for anyone, regardless of gender," said lead author Dr. Chester Ray, "but this study shines a light on how stress differently affects the hearts of women, potentially putting them at greater risk of a coronary event."
