The NATO-led International Security Assistance Force (ISAF) on Thursday congratulated the Afghan border and customs police for seizing some 16,000 kilograms of ammonium chloride in the Spin Boldak district of Kandahar province a day earlier.

The ISAF said in a statement posted on its website that the 3rd Kandak Afghan Border Police Zone 3 and Afghan Customs Police discovered the cache of 342 bags in a truck while conducting a dismounted patrol in the Spin Boldak district.

The foreign coalition force noted in the statement that "no friendly force or civilian casualties or damage were reported during the seizure" of the large quantity of Ammonium chloride, which is commonly used as a precursor to produce illegal drugs and often sold to fund insurgent activities.

"The seizure exemplifies the increasing professional capability of Afghan forces in stopping potential insurgent activity and to provide security throughout Afghanistan," the ISAF statement added.

The development comes as U.S. and other allied nations involved in the Afghan mission are making serious efforts to get the Afghan security forces ready and capable of handling the country's security before the international coalition troops pull out by the end of 2014.

Currently, there are over 130,000 foreign troops from more than 42 countries under the joint command of the NATO and the United States in Afghanistan to contain a resurgent Taliban in the war-torn Asian country.
