Kevin Bacon is set to star in a new prime time series, "The Following." The Kevin Williamson ("Vampire Diaries," "Dawson's Creek") created program has been called by an exec at FOX "our next '24'."

Bacon stars as a FBI profiler tracking Joe Carroll (James Purefoy), a serial killer who has escaped from prison. Shawn Ashmore ("X-Men") and Natalie Zea ("Justified") co-star.

"He had expressed an interest" in a series, said FOX Entertainment President, Kevin Reilly. "There are more and more big stars who are intrigued with doing television."

The first season of the show is pegged at 15 episodes, an industry trend which Reilly says the network is mimicking:

"We want to start experimenting, selectively, with shorter orders. Kevin was willing to do 15 maximum [per season], not 24."
