Marilyn Monroe Statue Erected In Palm Springs

A 26-foot tall statue of Marilyn Monroe has found its new home in Palm Springs, California. The piece, named "Forever Marilyn," was created by 80-year-old artist Seward Johnson and was originally placed in Chicago.

The piece earned mixed reviews in Chicago, where it was frequently vandalized and criticized by art critics in the media. Many other cities in the world were more than happy to accept her, however, and Palm Springs was ultimately selected.

"We received many requests as far away as Tokyo and Madrid and cities in Brazil, and we really felt that Palm Springs has a special connection to Marilyn because it is the legendary play land for Hollywood," said Paula Stoeke, the director and curator of the Sculpture Foundation, which manages the piece.

"Forever Marilyn" pictures the actress in her signature stance—pushing down her skirt as it is blown up from below.

"She's still being assembled-- it's taking a while because it's been so hot, making the surface hot to touch," said Nona Watson, CEO of the Palm Springs Chamber of Commerce.
