Switzerland's merchandise trade surplus increased markedly in July, data released by the Federal Customs Administrations showed Thursday.
The trade surplus increased to CHF2.92 billion in July from CHF2.19 billion in June, and reached the second highest level ever recorded. In May, the trade balance was a surplus of CHF2.5 billion.
Export of goods increased 0.8 percent on an annual basis to CHF17.41 billion in July, slower than the 2.6 percent gain seen in June.
The value of imports rose 1.8 percent year-on-year to CHF14.49 billion during the month, after growing 2 percent in the previous month.
In the January-July period, the trade balance was a surplus of CHF14.54 billion. Exports decreased 0.4 percent annually during the seven-month period, while imports advanced 0.8 percent, data showed.
