At least 23 people, including 22 children, have been injured in an attack by a knife-wielding man at a primary school in central China, media reports said citing local officials Friday.

The incident reportedly happened at the gate of a school in Chenpeng village in Henan province as the students were arriving for classes on Friday morning.

The lone adult victim in the attack was an elderly women. All of the injured have been taken to hospital for medical attention. Two of the injured children are said to be in serious condition.

The attacker, identified as a 36-year-old local man named Min Yingjun, was reportedly overpowered by security guards at the school and handed over to the police.

Security measures have been enhanced at Chinese schools following the deaths of some 20 Chinese children in a series of such knife attacks in recent years.

In wake of the recent crimes targeting children and the society as a whole, experts have been urging Chinese authorities to consider the attacks as a reflection of a general problem rather than isolated cases.

Most of such attacks in China have been blamed on mentally disturbed men, prompting calls for setting up more mental health clinics to deal with mounting stress levels in one of the world's fastest growing economies.
