Death toll from a typhoon that ravaged the Southern Philippines earlier this month climbed to over 1,000, the country's disaster management agency said Sunday.

Reports indicate that the toll may rise further as several hundreds are still missing.

According to the National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council, the death toll reached 1,020 on Sunday, while 844 are missing. Around 700,000 families are affected by the typhoon, as per the agencies calculations.

Bopha was the 16th storm this year to strike the Philippine archipelago which was exposed to frequent cyclones and other disasters. Tropical storm Washi that lashed Mindanao last year had left more than 1,200 people dead and hundreds of thousands homeless.
