The Labor Department said its jobless claims rose to 371,000 for the week ended January 5th from 372,000 in the previous week. Economists had expected claims to drop to 362,000.
The US dollar edged higher against its major rivals after the report. As of 8:35 am ET, the greenback was trading at 1.3115 against the euro, 1.6043 against the pound, 0.9243 against the Swiss franc and 88.26 against the yen.
