Billy Joel and Van Halen have been confirmed as headliners at Australia's inaugural Stone Music Festival on April 20 and 21 at Sydney's ANZ Stadium.

Joel's appearance may come as a surprise to some, as he previously announced his retirement from touring.

"At one point I couldn't even walk and I thought, 'OK, that's it for me. I'm just too old to do this.' I had to get hip replacements in both hips," he said in the latest issue of Rolling Stone.

David Lee Roth will join VH for the first time Down Under, while it is the band's first time there since 1998. Others set for the two-day fest include Buckcherry, Richie Ramone, Lifehouse and Kings of Leon.

Tickets for the Stone Music Festival go on sale on February 21. The fest was inspired by a cult '70s biker film named simply Stone.
