The suspected drug smuggler who allegedly shot at United States border patrol agents Tuesday has been apprehended, according to a sheriff spokesman, the Bellingham Herald is reporting.

The Sumas shooting suspect is in custody and "we don't believe there's any continuing threat to the community," Sheriff Bill Elfo said, the Herald said.

Sumas, Wa., is a border crossing between the U.S. and Canada.

Authorities said the man shot at border agents when they tried to detain him east of the Sumas border crossing, the Herald said.

Border agents were watching two camouflaged men with backpacks when the agents approached, and one man fired shots at them, according to the Herald.

U.S. Border Patrol Agent Eric Dorais said no one was injured by the gunfire, the Herald said.

According to CTV News, one suspect fled into the nearby woods while the other was taken into custody.

A massive manhunt was launched for the remaining suspect with Abbotsford Police assisting along with a Royal Canadian Mounted Police Air 1 helicopter, two U.S. police helicopters and an emergency response team, CTV News reported.
