Turkey's foreign trade deficit for April came in above economists' expectations, data released by Turkstat showed Friday.

The trade deficit widened to $10.304 billion from $6.643 billion last year. Economists were looking for a shortfall of $7.8 billion. Exports decreased 0.9 percent year-on-year, while imports jumped 18.4 percent.

On a calendar adjusted basis, exports declined 3.8 percent annually, while imports rose 14.3 percent. The decline in exports was the first since February 2010.

After seasonal and calendar adjustments, exports dropped 1.6 percent, down for a second straight month. Imports grew 10.7 percent from March, following a decline in the previous month.
