A 15-year-old French girl on vacation in St. Paul, Reunion was killed in a shark attack while snorkeling in the Indian Ocean. According to the BBC, it is the second fatal shark attack near the island this year.
The Daily Mail reports that the young lady's body was cut in two at the torso with part of her body taken away with the shark.
"The girls were in an area of St Paul bay where swimming is not allowed. She would have died instantly. The operation to recover the upper part of her body is ongoing," said Gina Hoarau, the head of public safety on the island.
Previous attacks have been further off the coast on surfers and wind surfers, reports France24, but the young girl was just "a few meters" offshore. A couple weeks prior to the fatal attack, authorities had warned water enthusiasts to be on the lookout.
