Janus Capital Group Inc. (JNS), an investment firm, Thursday reported fourth-quarter net income attributable to the company of $38.3 million or $0.21 per share, higher than $31.2 million or $0.17 per share in the previous year.

On average, 13 analysts polled by Thomson Reuters expected the company to earn $0.19 per share for the quarter. Analysts' estimates typically exclude special items.

Total revenues for the quarter increased to $226.2 million from $216.6 million a year ago. Analysts estimated revenues of $225.22 million for the quarter.

Average assets under management during the fourth quarter were $170.3 billion, compared with $155.6 billion a year earlier.

At December 31, 2013, total assets under management were $173.9 billion, up from $156.8 billion at the end of 2012.

The company also announced the appointment of Eugene Flood, Jr., to its board of directors.
