A new study has revealed that physical activity may not help teens cope with depression symptoms nor does it stop them from developing depression.

Researchers at the University of Cambridge tracked the physical activity of 736 participants with an average age of 14.5 for three years. They found that there was no link between physical activity and a lower incidence of depression symptoms in the subjects.

The report concludes that, "Although it is important to promote physical activity because of its well-documented effect on physical health, during adolescence, physical activity may not serve as a strong protective factor of developing depressive symptoms or disorders."

The study findings appeared on JAMA Pediatric on October 13.
