McDonald's Corp.'s (MCD) Mexican subsidiary has issued an apology on its Facebook page after one of its posts regarding Mexico's national dish Tamale created an uproar on the social media.

McDonald's, in an ad posted on its Mexican Facebook page, said "Tamales are a thing of past. The Mexican McBurrito also comes wrapped."

The ad intended to promote McDonald's new McBurrito in Mexico misfired with over 55 million people following its Mexican Facebook page. The post created a huge uproar on social media, with Mexican customers and Tamale patriots posting numerous posts against McDonald's.

Tamales are a traditional Mexican dish made of corn flour, which is filled with chicken or pork and steamed by wrapping it in a corn husk. Tamales are usually eaten during festivities, such as Christmas, the Day of the Dead, Las Posadas, La Candelaria Day (February 2) and Mexican Independence Day.

McDonald's posted the ad on La Candelaria day, but the company removed the ad from social media feeds following the backlash.

In an apology posted on its Mexican Facebook page, McDonald's said it respects the traditions and beliefs of all countries where it caters. The company apologized to everyone it offended and clarified that it did not intend to discredit Mexico's celebrations or traditional food Tamales.

MCD closed Wednesday's trading at $94.05, up $0.13 or 0.14%, on the NYSE. The stock, however, dropped $0.10 or 0.11%, in the after-hours trade.
