Kacey Musgraves has released her sophomore album, Pageant Material, the follow-up to her 2013 debut Same Trailer, Different Park. So far the critical responses have been largely positive.
According to FOX, Musgraves "uses her lyrical cleverness to delve into the personal observations of a small town southern woman establishing her individuality as she emerges into a faster-moving modern world."
LA Times adds that the album features "less of the rock-band-with-a-twang sound that characterizes much of Nashville today, more elegant steel guitar and spare acoustic instrumentation, contributing to an overall tone of sweetness."
Meanwhile, Cleveland.com, giving the album a grade of B+, says the album lacks some of the bite of her debut.
"The closest Musgraves comes to the defiant outlook of Same Trailer, Different Park is with her brilliant critique of sexism on 'Good Ol' Boys Club.' Pageant Material could benefit from more of that."
