Japanese electronics maker Sharp Corp. (SHCAY) will miss its first-half profit forecast and lower its target for the full year as rising competition among suppliers of liquid-crystal displays pushes down prices, Bloomberg reported citing a person familiar with the matter.

The company expects to fall short of its 10.00 billion yen or $83 million outlook for operating income when it reports earnings for the six months ending September 30. The company may report an operating loss for the first half or break even, the report said.

While reporting its first-quarter results in July 2015, Sharp said it expected net sales of 1.30 trillion yen and operating income of 10.00 billion yen for the first half of ending 30 September 2015, and continued to expect 2.80 trillion yen in net sales and 80.00 billion yen in operating income for the year ending March 31, 2016.

Sharp reportedly is considering selling a stake in the LCD operation to Hon Hai Precision Industry Co. or to Japan Display Inc. owner Innovation Network Japan Corp. The declining outlook for earnings this year has added urgency to the talks and increased the odds of a deal with Hon Hai. The Taiwan-based company would not face the antitrust hurdle Japan Display would have to clear as a rival supplier of LCDs to Apple.
