Mayor Betsy Hodges surprised Janet Jackson at the end of her Unbreakable world tour stop in Minneapolis by naming the day after the pop star. In Minneapolis, November 1 is now designated as Janet Jackson Day.
Jackson's long time collaborators Jimmy Jam and Terry Lewis are both from the area.
Hodges surprised the crowd by walking on stage and proceeding to read a long list of Jackson's achievements.
"Thank you so much," Jackson said. "I love you."
Jackson's latest album, Unbreakable, her first in seven years, debuted atop the Billboard 200 in its first week of release.
It's her first number one since 2008's Discipline, and makes Jackson third on the all-time list for most number one debuts by a female artist, after Barbara Streisand (with 10) and Madonna (eight).
