New Zealand's net migration increased in October from a year ago, figures from Statistics New Zealand showed Monday.

Permanent arrivals totaled an annual net gain of 62,500 in October, as more people arrived from than departed for Australia.

The annual net gain in migrants has been setting new records for the last 15 months. In October, net migration passed another milestone with the first annual gain in migrants from Australia in over 20 years, the agency said.

Overseas trips made by New Zealand residents grew 6.0 percent to 2.39 million in October. Visitor arrivals to the country numbered 229,400, up 9 percent from October last year.

"The final stages of the Rugby World Cup coincided with twice as many New Zealand residents travelling to the UK than in October last year," population statistics manager Vina Cullum said.
