David Bowie is dead at the age of 69 after an 18 month battle with cancer. The news was announced via post to the Thin White Duke's various social media accounts.
"David Bowie died peacefully today surrounded by his family after a courageous 18 month battle with cancer. While many of you will share in this loss, we ask that you respect the family's privacy during their time of grief," reads the statement.
Tributes have since come pouring in among rock's royalty, including Sir Paul McCartney, who called Bowie a "great star" who "played a very strong part in British musical history."
"[I] will always remember the great laughs we had through the years. His star will shine in the sky forever," added Macca.
Bowie's last album, Blackstar, was released on Friday, Bowie's 69th birthday.
