India's Wholesale Price Inflation Accelerates More Than Forecast

India's wholesale price inflation accelerated at a faster-than-expected pace in June, preliminary figures from the Ministry of Commerce and Industry showed Thursday.

The wholesale price index rose 1.62 percent year-over-year in June, faster than the 0.79 percent stable of rate of increase in May.

That was also above economists' expectations for a 1.2 percent climb. It was the third month of rise in a row.

Build up inflation rate in the financial year so far was 3.82 percent compared to a build up rate of 1.70 percent in the corresponding period of the previous year.

The wholesale price inflation for food articles quickened to 8.18 percent in June from 7.88 percent a month ago.

Similarly, price of food articles grew at a faster pace of 5.5 percent annually in June, following 4.6 percent spike in the prior month.

On a monthly basis, consumer prices climbed 1.4 percent at the end of the second quarter.

Official data released on Tuesday showed that the consumer price inflation broadly steady at 5.77 percent in June. It marked the strongest inflation in nearly two years.
